AStRA & OTHER PROJECTS

My main line of research has focused on the study of immigrant youth adaptation, development and acculturation. I have developed together with Professor Ann Masten (Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota, USA), Professor Jens Asendorpf (Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany) and Associate Professor Vassilis Pavlopoulos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) the Athena Studies of Resilient Adaptation (AStRA) project. This project has been supported by two grants co-funded by the European Social Fund and Greek National Resources.

The AStRA project includes two cohort longitudinal studies, one conducted before and the other during the Great Economic Recession in Greece. Over 2000 immigrant adolescents and their nonimmigrant classmates, were studied. Participants were in the first year of middle school at wave 1 and were followed for three years through middle school. Longitudinal data on the first cohort (C1) were collected for three consecutive years before the economic crisis (2005-6-7). Longitudinal data on the second cohort (C2) were collected (2013-14-15) during a period in which the economic crisis is in full swing.

The project is framed from within a risk and resilience developmental perspective. We focus on risks and resources for immigrant youth's, and their Greek classmates', adaptation and well-being. Key questions addressed are: (1) Whether being an immigrant is a risk factor for youth's adaptation, development and acculturation? (2) Whether and how different personal and contextual factors and processes account for individual differences in immigrant youth adaptation. (3) Whether and how the Great Economic Recession in Greece placed at risk the adaptation and wellbeing of immigrant and Greek youth (cohort comparison)? (4) whether family functioning longitudinally mediated the link between families' economic hardship and youth's adaptation and wellbeing.

Between 2015-2018, we also took part as partners at the European Commission Horizon 2020 Program titled: "Constructing AcTive CitizensHip with European Youth: Policies, Practices, Challenges and Solutions (CATCH-EyoU). (PI: Elvira Cicognani, University of Bologna, Italy, Coordinator of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens team: Frosso Motti-Stefanidi).
